Description:
M85 is a bright galaxy visible in binoculars that belongs to the Virgo Cluster of galaxies.   Telescopically it is brighter than nearby M100.   Through a telescope M85 resembles an oval glow with a brighter nucleus region.   It is classified as a "lenticular galaxy", a cross between a spiral and an elliptical.   It shares the field of view with the fainter and smaller galaxy NGC 4394 along with a 10th magnitude star.   Higher magnification is helpful in detecting subtle detail.   In 1960, a supernova was observed in M85.
